Astronaut’s photo exhibit captures birds and their struggle to survive
Dr. Roberta Bondar addressed a packed house in the IMAX Theatre at Science North last week. The exhibit, Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive, features ground-breaking new perspectives on at-risk birds. Says Kruzel, “The title really gives a keenness to the imperative to understanding how humankind’s actions are affecting nesting areas, migration routes and overwintering zones.”
“We need to pay attention to these fragile organisms and their fragile environments,” said Bondar. “We think that doing our surveys at three different levels is important … first at carpet level – as if with a magnifying glass – then aerial … and then we get into space and see the whole corridors, and patterns we didn’t even know existed.”
Kruzel’s article describes several features of the exhibition and contains more commentary by Dr. Bondar as well as reactions from many in her audience.

Bondar unveils powerful photo exhibition at hometown gallery
More than ten years of international bird migratory research and photography were unveiled at the Art Gallery of Algoma Wednesday as the Sault native presented the opening of her exhibition Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive.
Flood captures some of the attendee excitement and the photographic scope of Dr. Bondar’s exhibition from her project AMASS [Avian Migration Aerial, Surface, Space] or ‘Space for Birds’ while noting the number of continents and different avian species her project involves.
Flood includes attendee comments and over a dozen photos from the event.

Humans can ‘learn a lot’ from nature: BONDAR
Kelly notes the “dicey prospects” that disappearing species face in their own habitats.
“Habitat for us is very important – our houses, our communities,” says Dr. Bondar. “For birds, it’s the same kind of thing, only they don’t need technology to live, but they actually need technology to survive and we have that technology to help them.”
Ten years in development, Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive runs until Oct. 15 at Art Gallery of Algoma.

Dr. Roberta Bondar in the Sault to unveil new photo exhibit
Nordstrom reports Dr. Roberta Bondar’s introduction of Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive to a packed gallery space at the Art Gallery of Algoma on Wednesday evening before its public opening. Bondar’s 6th exhibit features Whooping Cranes, Lesser Flamingos, and Piping Plovers to represent migratory birds at serious risk from increasingly intense storms, water demands of humans, and loss of habitats needed during migration.
Exhibition features images from Bondar’s years of recording migratory patterns through the East Rift of Africa and the parallel patterns of migratory flyways from Northwest Territories to Texas. The installation includes Dr. Bondar’s images from land and from aerial perspectives. As the principal investigator of her migratory bird project with NASA, Dr. Bondar also includes photographs from space orbit of the birds’ lands and routes from NASA’s film library.

Dr. Roberta Bondar’s passion for flight and nature continues to soar
Flood outlines Dr. Bondar’s lengthy research project Space For Birds. As it nears completion, Dr. Bondar continues to coordinate the tracking of seven unique avian species plus their pathways from the ground, the air, and from space.
Later this year, Dr. Bondar will present a photographic exhibition of her years’ long work at the Art Gallery of Algoma.
