Dr. Roberta Bondar, 1st Canadian Woman in Space, Turns 80

Banerjee recaps Dr. Bondar’s work as a payload specialist, studying the effects of microgravity on the human body aboard space shuttle Discovery in 1992. And the what, how, and why of that flight and its work impacted not just space exploration but her life in general.

Bondar’s reflections in this interview cover her work thereafter and dedication to environmental issues that have led to her focus on migratory avian species, as her recent award-winning book testifies.

The reporter leads Dr. Bondar into the Artemis II moon mission and Canada’s two astronauts involved and her hopes for them in future.

Banerjee prompts Bondar to discuss her own personal views that she shares with younger generations who seek advice about what they need most as they advance through their own lives. Dr. Bondar offers impactful tips about curiosity, service to others, and being the one responsible for raising the bar on one’s own life.

This is a wide-ranging interview of Dr. Bondar packed with tasty glimpses, notes, and reflections. Including this birthday portrait by The Canadian Press/Chris Young!
